In Topeka one windy day in October 1868, an optimistic entrepreneur named Cyrus K. Holliday turned a shovel of Kansas loam and started what someday would be the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway.

Ultimately, Santa Fe would become: A darling of Wall Street. A believer in overland travel by train long after most other railroads had given up on the idea. Sometimes, a venturesome innovator in the hardware of railroading. Sometimes, an ignorer of policies and practices long held dear to the railroad industry. Perhaps, the most prolific exponent of the artistry and craftsmanship of southwest native Americans.

Building well on its fascinating history, Santa Fe set the pace.

Holiday would hardly recognize his Santa Fe today. But we think he'd be delighted with how many individuals around this world follow and study Santa Fe's history -- and how many distill and display Santa Fe's operations and traditions in scale models. SFRH&MS is the world's principal independent organization devoted to preserving, studying, and sharing information about all aspects of the history of the Santa Fe and about modeling its operations, equipment, and structures. To students or teachers of history, to casual observers, to model builders, SFRH&MS can be a matchless source of material about the Santa Fe in all its manifestations. to take advantage of what SFRH&MS offers, you must be a member.

The history of SFRH&MS goes back to the late 1960s, to an organization that involved itself principally in model railroading with a Santa Fe flavor. In mid-1994, what by then was the Santa Fe Modelers Organization joined with the Santa Fe Railway Historical Society, a smaller group with a specific interest in the history of the railroad. The result: today's broader, stronger SFRH&MS.

SFRH&MS owns and is cataloging a sizable archive of Santa Fe papers and artifacts. It works with other who also own significant collections. For historians and modelers alike, SfRH&MS publishes books and other materials designed to convey information about the Santa Fe's operations and rolling equipment and its buildings and other structures. It provides a line of products designed to help model railroaders build accurate representations of the Santa Fe.

SFRH&MS members meet in convention each summer at a location on the Santa Fe. They hear experts in Santa Fe history and modeling conduct a contest to determine who can build the best models of Santa Fe equipment and structures, tour places of Santa Fe interest, and see to the business of the Society.

SFRH&MS produces a quarterly magazine, The Warbonnet, in which it explores both the history of and how best to model the Santa Fe.
