The 2010 Santa Fe Railway Historical and Modeling Society convention will be held July 21 thru 25, 2010 in Denver, Colorado.  This will be the 30th Convention for our organization and we have planned an exciting convention for everyone.  The theme of the convention this year is “The Colorado Flyer”, a premier passenger train between Chicago and Denver in the 1930’s.  We will also be featuring the Royal Gorge war between the Santa Fe and Denver and Rio Grande.  The cost of the convention this year will be $130.00 which includes clinics, contests, displays, banquet and Sunday breakfast, a pin, and a patch. Extra banquet tickets are $45.00, extra breakfast tickets are $25.00.  Convention mugs will be available for $8.00 as well as extra pins and patches.

The convention will be held at the Double Tree Hotel located on Quebec Street in Denver next to the Stapleton Redevelopment area of Denver, just off I-70.  This is a new development on the site of the old Stapleton Airport and features many new restaurants, shops, theaters, and fast food venues across the street from the hotel.  The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle service to this area and from the Denver International Airport.  The hotel rate is $109.00 for a single and $114.00 for double occupancy and includes a full breakfast buffet.  Reservations can be made by calling 800-222-8733 or on-line.

Registration is open on Wednesday, July 21, from Noon to 10:00 PM and reopens at 5:30 AM Thursday morning. We begin our convention on Wednesday evening, July 21st, with an extra fare BBQ Dinner at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden from 6 to 8 PM..  The museum has many pieces of standard and narrow gauge equipment on display including the Santa Fe Observation Car “Navajo”.  The fee for this extra fare will be $20.00 including dinner and admission to the museum.

On Thursday morning, July 22nd, we will have our Second Extra Fare tour to the Royal Gorge in Canon City, Colorado.  The buses for the Royal Gorge trip begin loading at 6:00 AM Thursday and leave promptly at 6:30 AM. On arrival at Canon City we can tour the Santa Fe Depot and then board the Royal Gorge RR train for a round trip tour through the Gorge where many remnants of the Santa Fe remain.  These include a cantilever suspension bridge that carries the railroad along the river as well as a few forts remaining from the war.  On the return trip we follow some more of the old Santa Fe line from Colorado Springs to Palmer Lake where we will enjoy a box lunch and some live (hopefully) action on the joint line.  From here we head back to the hotel with some more views of the Joint Line.  This tour will be limited to 160 people and will cost $70.00 SOLD OUT

On Friday, July 23rd, and Saturday, July 24th, we will be in the hotel for our usual clinics, contests, vendor sales room, and displays.  We have a number of great clinicians and programs on history and modeling for this year, one by a Rio Grande historian on the topic of the Royal Gorge war. Clinics begin at 8:30 AM Friday morning, July 23, and the Speaker Program begins at 7:00 PM Friday evening.

Friday will also feature a program for the ladies, who wish to discover some of Denver’s exciting special places. The first stop on the tour will be the Castle at Cherokee Ranch, which has a view of 150 miles of mountains.  The inside tour features world class antiques, art and history.  The second stop will be The Fort, a restaurant featuring western food and history.  Its adobe architecture is a re-creation of the 1840’s Bent Fort on the old Santa Fe Trail.  This restaurant was the site of a State Dinner hosted by President Clinton and a place you will want to come back to for the buffalo steak.  Then on to Red Rocks, a natural amphitheatre, for lunch and shopping at the visitors’ center.  The exhibits showcase the many groups that have played here, from the Beatles to Big Head Todd.  Time permitting we will stop on Dinosaur Ridge to view dinosaur footprints and fossil bones.  The extra fare is $50.00, which includes transportation and entry fees.  We must have 15 reservations to make this trip.

We will be offering an incentive for models entered in the contest this year of a $10.00 certificate, which can be redeemed at any vendor in the sales room.  This will be limited to 3 incentives per person.

On Saturday afternoon we will be offering our third Extra Fare tour, which will be a chartered bus tour to the Greeley Freight Station Museum in Greeley.  If you have not seen this large, beautifully done model railroad, now is your chance.  The cost of this extra fare tour is $20.00 and includes the bus and admission.  The bus will have you back in plenty of time to get ready for the awards banquet on Saturday evening.

The convention will end on Sunday morning, July 25th, at our breakfast and annual meeting of the society.  Sunday afternoon will feature tours of local layouts.  We look forward to seeing and meeting all of you in Denver next summer for what we believe will be a very rewarding convention.
