Atlas H-16-44

Atlas has produced HO Model FM H-16-44, numbers 2803 & 2804, and no number, in Zebra paint.

ATSF had 20 of the H16-44's, but only the first 10 were of the early "Loewy" body & cab with the sill mounted handrails design that Atlas has modeled.

Unnumered model

They were built March-June 1951 as 2800-2809. However, these numbers interfered with the GP7s that were being delivered so they were renumbered 3000-3009 between July and August, 1952. Therefore, the models numbered by Atlas are only prototypical for the Summer 1951-Summer 1952 time period. Prototype modelers for later time periods will want to get the no-number engine and decal it for the 3000-3009 series. These are prototypical until the end of the Zebra paint scheme, circa 1960.

The model is highly detailed and includes cab interior and crew. It has a DCC decoder installed but is set for cab control as delivered. Headlights and classification lights change according to direction.

Generally theses engines began operations on the coast lines in California and were moved to Kansas. From photos in books we can determine the following dates. Can anyone add to this?

2800 Barstow 10/51; San Diego 3/52 > 3000 Kansas City 1962 in BLYE paint

2801 San Diego 3/52; Cajon helper 6/52 > 3001 Santa Fe Springs, CA, 8/53, San Diego 3/54; Topeka 1/59 (Rail Junction Slides sold a photo of 2801 listed as in San Angelo, TX, in 1951. That does not fit other records)

2802 San Diego 10/51; Cajon helper 12/51 & 6/52 > 3002 Topeka, local #45 6/57

2803 San Diego 9/51 > 3003 San Diego 9/52; Lamanda Park, CA, 2/53; San Marcos, CA, local 8/56; St. Joseph's Branch 2/58; Kansas City 1963 in BLYE paint

2804 San Diego & San Bernardino 9/51 > 3004 St. Joseph's Branch 7/59

2805 San Diego 11/51> 3005

2806 San Diego 10/51 > 3006 San Diego 3/54; Topeka 8/57; 8/60 in BLYE paint

2807 San Diego 9/51 & 2/52 > 3007 Morena, CA, 3/53; Kansas City 11/60 in BLYE paint, Emporia 1/66.

2808 San Diego 9/51; San Bernardino 12/51 > 3008 Morena, CA, 3/53

2809 San Diego 12/51 > 3009 San Diego 3/54; Cajon helper 5/56; Emporia, KS 9/58

Does anyone have any sightings in Kansas for 1953-54? When did these engines move east from CA?
